Periodontal disease can cause havoc in your mouth
Endodontics and restorative dentistry can save your teeth from the effects of gum disease
Periodontitis is an extremely dangerous dental disease which affects many older Australians. It is a severe gum infection caused by dental plaque and tartar on the teeth which stems from neglecting your dental hygiene regime. In order to combat this very harmful condition the team at New England Dental Group in Armidale utilise preventative dentistry techniques so that your plaque does not get out of hand or develop into gingivitis or periodontitis.
Preventative dentistry is the key to maintaining a healthy mouth
Preventative dentistry involves diligently subscribing to a standard dental hygiene routine and regularly visiting your dentist at New England Dental Group so that we can monitor your health and any changes in your mouth. There are a number of ways to improve your dental hygiene to avoid periodontal diseases and plaque including:
- Brushing twice a day
- Flossing once before bed
- Using a mouthwash after every time you brush your teeth
Mouth wash is an underrated prevention technique and a very effective one when it comes to decreasing the amount of plaque in your mouth. Small prevention techniques such as these are even more important as you get older as years of wear and tear can weaken the enamel and make the roots and dentine of your teeth more susceptible to infection and damage. If the nerves of your teeth (otherwise known as pulp) become infected you may require endodontic therapy to prevent extraction.
Endodontic therapy can treat a damaged tooth before it becomes unsalvageable
In order to preserve a tooth that has become damaged by harmful bacteria we will most commonly perform root canal therapy. Root canal or endodontic therapy involves the removal of damaged pulp inside of the tooth. This pulp will then be replaced with a material named gutta percha which is a filler material used to fill in the space the pulp once occupied. This material and the tooth will then be sealed with a tooth-coloured crown which will make the restoration look exactly like a natural tooth. In the event your tooth cannot be saved by endodontic therapy we will need to extract the damaged tooth and replace it with a dental implant or bridge.
Dental implants are known as your second adult teeth
Dental implants are the permanent solution to missing teeth as they are secured with a synthetic root, or titanium screw which is inserted into the gum and jaw. Over time this titanium implant will meld with the jaw bone creating a permanent and strong support for your synthetic tooth. The implant will be covered with a porcelain crown so that your natural smile is not affected by an unsightly gap or metal implant.
