Tooth coloured fillings vs amalgam fillings

Many patients avoid visiting the dentist due to their belief that unattractive amalgam fillings will be used. Here at New England Dental in Armidale we have some great news!

Amalgam fillings are a thing of the past. With modern advancements in materials, today tooth coloured fillings are strong, durable and provide further reassurance of safety in comparison to amalgam.

The truth about amalgam

Amalgam fillings, also known as silver fillings, is a material that contains approx. 54 percent mercury with other metals, including silver, copper and tin, which has been used for over 150 years to seal and protect the back molars. Although amalgam has been used in dentistry for a long period its popularity is decreasing as a result of recent studies and findings.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and Australian Dental Association, amalgam does not contain harmful levels of amalgam to have an affect on the body, stating that it is safe for adults and children over 6. However, sophisticated tests conducted over the past decade have changed this view; research results finding very small amounts of mercury, in the form of vapour, are released as the amalgam filling wears. These findings have promoted further studies into the effects of amalgam fillings.

While some dentists still use amalgam as a material of choice for dental fillings, here at New England Dental we believe it’s better to be safe than sorry. As such, we do not offer amalgam at our practice, and instead provide composite resin material as a safe, nontoxic and effective alternative.

Composite resin restorations

Our tooth coloured fillings are made of a safe composite resin material that restore the curvatures and shape of the tooth for a natural looking appearance. Composite is made from acrylic resin that is expertly applied to surface of the tooth and matched to the exact shade of your natural tooth. The material is sculpted to the tooth and then set with a special light. From here , the new restoration is then refined and polished to blend with your natural teeth.

The benefits of composite resin

  • Composite is a relatively strong material, providing good durability in small to mid-sized restorations that need to withstand moderate chewing pressure;
  • Composite may generally be used on either front or back teeth;
  • Fillings are usually completed in a single visit (with exceptions noted below);
  • Moderately resistant to breakage;
  • Low risk of leakage being bonded only to enamel
  • Does not corrode and generally holds up well to biting force
  • Moderately resistant to further decay
  • Frequency of repair or replacement is low to moderate

At New England Dental in Armidale, we strive to ensure only the highest level of quality care is given to our patients in addition to the highest, ethical standards are adhered to by each member of our team.

We can also replace old amalgam fillings with composite resin to provide a natural-looking and virtually undetectable solution to protecting your teeth and smile.
