Why root canal treatment is as easy as a regular dental check-up
Fear of root canal treatment should be a thing of the past
Back in the day when root canal treatment started there may have been cause for fear, but nowadays with anaesthetics readily available (and safe) root canal treatments are as safe and routine as a dental check-up.
To say that it is as routine as a regular check-up is not to detract from the importance of root canal treatment or even to say that it is easy. More that as dental science has evolved the way in which root canal treatment is performed is much easier and pain-free for the patient.
At New England Dental Group in Armidale we are committed to providing you with the best dental service available…
Despite myths to the contrary, root canal treatments are all about saving the tooth (or teeth).
Root canals are painful:
This is not true. A local anaesthetic is given to alleviate pain and the whole point of a root canal is to remove the infection which will alleviate the pain.
Root canals do not work and the tooth will inevitably have to be removed:
As noted above, root canal treatment is all about saving the tooth. Because nothing can replace a natural tooth (except dental implants…and bridges, but at the end of the day, your natural teeth are better)
Root canal treatments are expensive:
Well, root canal treatment is a preventive dental treatment. One way to think of it is like this: weigh up the cost of a root canal treatment against tooth extraction and a crown or bridge (clearly we are not saying anything is wrong with getting crowns or bridges but if you can avoid them with a root canal treatment, then why not?).
Why would you need a root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment becomes necessary when an infection has developed inside the tooth; the infection is also known as ‘pulp’, causes lots of pain and can lead to tooth loss.
5 signs of root canal infection:
- Spontaneous tooth pain
- Sensitivity to cold drinks and hot food
- Facial swelling
- Loosening of the tooth
- Puss oozing around the mouth
A root canal treatment involves disinfecting the internal portion of the tooth, extracting any decay and infection. Once the decay and infection has been removed the internal structure of the teeth is filled with sealant.
After the infection’s removed and the tooth sealed it will be about two weeks you can expect a functioning healthy tooth. Depending on the severity of the root canal treatment you may require a crown to ensure the strength of the natural tooth.
At New England Dental Group we use state-of-the-art dental technology and materials to provide our patients with the best, most precise treatment available. With our use of anaesthetic (such as nitrous oxide (happy gas) and local anaesthetic) you can relax during your dental experience feeling calm.
Our focus is adult preventative care, so you can preserve your teeth now and into the future; and that is one part of the reason we are behind the benefits of root canal treatment. It is an ideal way to maintain your natural tooth and a healthy smile.
