Frequently Asked Questions

Below we have compiled a list of common questions and answers you may have regarding treatment.

  • Should I Visit the Dentist Only When I Have a Problem?

No. You wouldn't take your car to a mechanic only when it has a problem. You generally have it serviced once or twice per year to prevent any major problems. Comparably, it is important to visit your dentist once every 6 months to prevent any major traumas from occurring. It is always more convenient and less costly to have regular check-ups and maintain your oral health.

  • What is the Difference Between Amalgam and Tooth-Coloured Fillings?

Traditional amalgam fillings are composed of mercury and can be very harsh on the tooth structure. Tooth coloured fillings are a popular treatment option today and are made with a durable composite resin. They are fixed to the surface of the tooth with layers rather than obstructing any of the existing tooth structure. With modern advancements in materials, today tooth coloured fillings are strong enough to outlast the strength of amalgam fillings.

  • Will Whitening My Teeth Cause Any Damage?

No. Tooth whitening is a procedure that has been around for over two decades. In fact the active ingredient of tooth whitening agents (hydrogen peroxide) was used as a treatment for improving the health of people's gums. Tooth whitening is a completely safe procedure to improve your smile and, if administered professionally in our dental practice.

  • I Have a Cracked Tooth at the Front of My Smile, What Can I Do About This?

Veneers can rectify this problem and restore your smile. Veneers are porcelain shells that covers the front surface of the tooth that neatly cover chips and cracks. They are applied by a special adhesive and can be modelled to match your natural tooth colour, size and shape. You can re-shape your teeth with this cosmetic restoration as well, if you are hindered by a crooked or discoloured tooth at the front of your smile.

  • What Are Crowns and Bridges?

Crowns and bridges are artificial teeth that fill the vacant gaps in the smile after tooth loss. They also restore function to the smile so you can chew and bite down on your favourite foods as normal. Crowns are generally used to cap teeth that are damaged beyond filling or to reinstate strength to a tooth after it has undergone root canal treatment. Bridges can be used to restore a row of missing teeth in the smile so you can chew and smile as normal.

  • What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a titanium fixture that acts as an artificial tooth root in the jawbone. From here a denture, crown or veneer is attached to restore the function and aesthetics to the smile. Dental implants restore strength to the jaw and prevent your remaining teeth from shifting after tooth loss.

  • What Does Root Canal Therapy Include?

Root canal therapy may be required when the inside of the tooth (pulp) and the nerve becomes infected. Commonly this is the result of an untreated cavity, which allows the bacteria to enter and spread infection. Root canal therapy aims to disinfect any debris and bacteria from the inside of the tooth and seal it, so it can return to normal healthy function. In some cases a crown may be required to restore strength to the newly filled tooth.
